Leashes

A leash is the most valuable piece of equipment. It can save you a lot of hassle trying to get you board back after being wiped out. Leashes come in all shapes and sizes, straight or coiled. Coiled leashes keep the cord away from your hand while you paddle but if they're too short, then they can restrict arm movement. Some leashes attach to your upper arm instead of his wrist, allowing you more room to move when performing killer moves. All leashes can tangle up at times, but some do this so often that you stop worrying about the surf and worry about whether the leash is going to tangle or not. The coiled variety cost more but I think it's worth it because it can save you a lot of time and hassle.

In regards to where to place a plug for the leash in your new board, it doesn't matter where in the board your leash is placed but I would recommend that you place it near middle of the board. It gives the rider more freedom to move and the leash won't get tangled in the water very often. Also if you plan to drop-knee the leash won't get in the way of your foot.
