The Forward Spin
Learning to spin is one of the first moves you should have on your trick list. It's an area of riding everyone needs to constantly work on to obtain that stylish approach. Spin master Guilherme Tamega knows his stuff as well as anyone, indicated by this sequence.
Going into the spin, you must have what you are trying to achieve set firmly in your mind. Keep your eyes focused on the direction you wish to turn. The spin move requires a rider to complete a full circle on the wave face with a smooth and flowing action. The key to this is body positioning. To begin with, commence your rotation by turning back up the wave face. Once you are turning, release your inside rail by sliding your bodyweight forward towards the nose of your board. At all times, your board should now be flat to the wave surface to prevent any drag or catching an edge. Likewise, your legs should be raised and, to keep the move looking stylish, they should be crossed.
If you're having trouble completing a full circle, it could mean you're lacking speed and losing momentum. Another means of completing the spin is what is commonly called the hand drag. If you slip your hand from your inside rail into the wave face it can act as a centre axis and help you to pull your board all the way around. The hand drag is frowned on by most, but it has also become a contest trick in gutless conditions and if done correctly is kept secret. Ideally, the hand drag should be used only as a last resort.
Once you have completed a full circle, it's necessary to slide back on your board to re-centre your weight and continue the ride. |
