The Freefall
This photo of Shark Island~:razy Warren 'Wazza' Feinbeer demonstrates what it would be like falling out of a two-storey window. Luckily, water is more forgiving than concrete. That's if you don't hit the reef below ... but that's another story. A freefail occurs on takeoff when a wave is too steep or hollow. it requires a rider to air drop.
When a wave demands this type of entry, be sure to stay centred directly above your board as you begin to fall. Keep a firm grip and, with arms outstretched, use your elbows tucked up on your board to absorb some of the shock as you land in the wave trough. Your bodyweight should fall on the back corner of your inside rail while your fully extended legs help slow you down as they reunite with the wave face and plane the surface.
Dragging your legs will help prevent you spinning out as you now should be leaning into your bottom turn and holding your edge. Time your turn or you will lose control by either spinning out or getting caught with not enough speed. Dragging your legs behind will give you more control.
